Today we’d like to introduce you to Melanie Daniels.
Hi Melanie, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
If someone had asked me ten years ago what I’d be doing today, I don’t think I could have imagined any of it.
Today I split my life between music, food, and creating experiences for people. Some days I’m performing with my band, Melanie Daniels & The Sous Chefs. Other days I’m designing luxury events, cooking as a private chef, or building beautiful celebrations where food, hospitality, and live music all come together. To most people those careers seem completely unrelated, but to me they’ve always been the same thing.
I’ve always believed that taking care of people is an art.
I grew up in Bellingham, Washington, in a family that taught me the importance of hard work, creativity, and making people feel at home. Music became my emotional outlet from a young age, while cooking became the way I showed love. I never wanted to choose between the two.
After culinary school at the Pacific Institute of Culinary Arts in Vancouver, I chased opportunities that took me all over the world. I cooked in Hawaii, learned techniques throughout Southeast Asia, Australia, New Zealand, Greece, and Italy, worked in restaurants, became a sous chef in my early twenties, and eventually transitioned into private chef work for families, celebrities, and luxury events.
Those experiences taught me discipline, leadership, and hospitality at the highest level.
At the same time, music never stopped calling me.
I continued writing songs, performing anywhere I could, and eventually made the leap to Los Angeles to pursue my career as an artist. Starting over in a city like LA wasn’t easy. You leave behind your community, your comfort, and any sense of certainty. There were moments where I questioned whether I was doing the right thing, but every performance reminded me why I came.
Music has always been my journal.
The songs I write come from real experiences—friendships, relationships, heartbreak, family, self-worth, and learning who I am. I hope people hear my music and feel a little less alone. If someone leaves one of my shows feeling understood, inspired, or hopeful, then I’ve done my job.
One of the biggest lessons I’ve learned is that success rarely looks like a straight line.
There have been times where I’ve worked long catering shifts during the day, gone straight to rehearsals at night, and then spent the next morning planning events or writing songs. I’ve worn more hats than I can count, but every experience has taught me something valuable. Whether I’m managing a luxury event, cooking dinner for a family, or standing on stage with my guitar, I’m constantly learning how to better serve people.
Recently I’ve stepped into a larger leadership role helping grow a boutique luxury event company, while continuing to expand my private chef business and build my music career. I’m also developing concepts that combine everything I love—live music, incredible food, and meaningful experiences that bring people together around one table.
Looking back, I realize my career has never really been about food or music individually.
It’s about connection.
A great meal can create memories that last for decades. A great song can make someone feel seen. A beautifully designed event can bring families together during life’s biggest moments. That’s what motivates me every day.
I’m still building the life I’ve dreamed about, and I honestly think that’s the exciting part. I’m not at the finish line—I’m in the middle of the story. Every show, every event, every new client, every song I release is another chapter.
If there’s one thing I hope people take away from my journey, it’s that you don’t have to fit into one box. Sometimes your greatest strength comes from embracing every part of who you are and finding a way to weave it all together.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
One of the biggest challenges has been learning how to build a career that doesn’t fit into just one box. I’ve always been passionate about both music and food, and for a long time I felt like I had to choose one or explain why I was pursuing both. Over time, I realized they all stem from the same purpose—bringing people together and creating meaningful experiences.
Moving to Los Angeles was another major challenge. Starting over in a new city meant leaving behind my support system and rebuilding everything from the ground up. There were plenty of moments of uncertainty, balancing multiple jobs, long hours, and the ups and downs that come with pursuing a creative career. I’ve also had to learn the business side of everything—marketing myself, building a brand, finding clients, and navigating rejection without losing sight of why I started.
Looking back, those challenges have become some of my greatest teachers. They’ve made me more resilient, adaptable, and confident in who I am. I no longer see my different passions as separate careers, but as different ways of creating connection, whether that’s through a meal, a live performance, or a thoughtfully designed event.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I wear a few different hats, but they all revolve around one purpose: creating memorable experiences that bring people together.
I’m a private chef, luxury event producer, and singer-songwriter based in Los Angeles. As a chef, I specialize in elevated, seasonal cuisine with influences from the Pacific Northwest, Hawaii, Southeast Asia, and the Mediterranean. I provide private chef services, luxury catering, curated meal prep, and custom event experiences where every detail is thoughtfully designed—from the menu to the guest experience.
Alongside that, I’m also a performing artist. I perform as a solo act, duo, and with my full band, Melanie Daniels & The Sous Chefs, playing a blend of soulful pop, indie rock, and Americana. My original music is rooted in honest storytelling and creating an atmosphere where people feel connected and understood.
What sets me apart is that I don’t see food, music, and hospitality as separate businesses—they’re all part of the same experience. Whether I’m preparing a private dinner, producing a luxury celebration, or performing on stage, my goal is always to create moments that people genuinely remember. I’m probably best known for bringing warmth, creativity, and intentionality to everything I do, and for finding ways to blend beautiful food, thoughtful hospitality, and live music into one cohesive experience.
Can you share something surprising about yourself?
People are often surprised that I never saw myself choosing between music and food. Most people assume they’re completely different careers, but I’ve always viewed them as two forms of hospitality. Whether I’m writing a song, preparing a meal, or designing an event, my goal is the same: to create a moment where people feel connected. Once I realized that, everything in my career started to make sense.
Another fun fact is that I started my first business in seventh grade—a custom cake business inspired by Cake Boss. Looking back, it’s funny because even then I was combining creativity, entrepreneurship, and bringing joy to people. In many ways, I’m still doing the same thing today, just on a much bigger scale.
