Community Highlights: Meet Lisa McGlothlin of Lisa McG Nutrition Therapy

Today we’d like to introduce you to Lisa McGlothlin.

Hi Lisa, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
Sure! I initially became interested in nutrition toward the end of high school, so I was pretty lucky to have somewhat of an idea of what I wanted to do early on, which I think is pretty rare. I literally decided to become a dietitian during my college tour when a dietitian spoke to our group.

I then went on to earn my Bachelor of Science in Nutrition. While waiting to get into graduate school, I needed a job, so I applied for a position I saw posted. It was at a local outpatient eating disorder treatment program, something I had ZERO experience in. I literally fell into this work and fell in love with it. I had a lot of learning and unlearning to do, but I felt so excited and passionate about what I was learning. I had no idea my work could look like this.

From then on, I made sure the rest of my education and career path focused on eating disorders, disordered eating, and the philosophies I had started learning about, including Health at Every Size® (HAES) and intuitive eating.

After graduating, I began working at a residential eating disorder treatment center. I worked my way into a leadership role and ultimately worked across the residential, PHP, and IOP levels of care, treating adults with eating disorders for five years.

At some point along the way, I realized I wanted to be able to help the people I was working with continue their recovery after they returned home, so I opened my private practice, Lisa McG Nutrition Therapy. I continued learning and educating myself while gaining experience working with a wide variety of diagnoses, ages, and treatment modalities, all of which I bring into my practice today.

For the past three years, I have been treating individuals of all ages and genders with all types of eating disorders in my private practice.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Definitely not! I’ve learned so much about myself, running a business, being a dietitian, eating disorders, and the many co-occurring conditions that can come with them. I love learning, but the process isn’t always easy.

Throughout this journey, I’ve learned what is and isn’t right for me, what brings me joy, what doesn’t, and what helps me grow. Starting a business has pushed me in ways I never expected. There have been plenty of moments where I’ve questioned myself, felt overwhelmed, or realized I didn’t know nearly as much as I thought I did. Being a dietitian, especially in the eating disorder field, means you’re constantly learning and staying curious.

I’ve also learned so much about how to regulate myself and recognize where my own growth edges are. More than anything, I’ve learned to be okay with the process of learning and growing. Not feeling confident or knowing everything can be a real hit to the ego, but I’ve watched myself (and my clients!!) become so much stronger and more grounded through that process. Honestly, that’s been the best part, even though growth itself can be really uncomfortable.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your business?
I am the founder of Lisa McG Nutrition Therapy, a solo outpatient practice offering nutrition therapy for individuals struggling with eating disorders and disordered eating. I work with all ages, genders, and eating disorder diagnoses, and I also provide weight-neutral general wellness nutrition counseling.

My practice is rooted in a weight-neutral philosophy, meaning I don’t offer weight loss services. Instead, I believe it is possible to improve our health without making weight the focus. I also integrate the principles of intuitive eating into my work and truly embrace an “all foods fit” perspective. To me, that means believing all foods can have a place in a healthy lifestyle.

What I’m most proud of is creating a space where my clients feel safe. So many people have had difficult experiences with healthcare providers, and I love watching them begin to make meaningful changes because they finally feel supported, understood, and genuinely seen.

I think what sets me apart is that so much of what I do is nutrition therapy. Of course we talk about food, eating patterns, and nutrition, but we’re also exploring what’s hard, why it’s hard, and how to move through it. We aren’t just setting goals or creating meal plans, because our relationship with food and our health is so much more complex than that. I’m willing to meet people exactly where they are, sit with them through the hard moments when they need support, and gently challenge them when they’re ready to grow.

I also really value bringing my humanness into my work. We’ll laugh together, I’ll take the time to genuinely get to know you as a person, and I want every client to know they’re working with a real human – not someone who has all the answers, but someone who’s in their corner.

I currently offer one-on-one nutrition counseling virtually in 14 states, as well as in-person sessions in Monterey, California. I also offer a free 15-minute consultation so we can make sure we’re a good fit before getting started. From there, we’ll schedule an initial assessment where I can get to know you, understand your story, and begin creating a plan together. Ongoing sessions are offered in both 30- and 50-minute formats, and together we’ll decide what frequency and session length best fits your needs.

We love surprises, fun facts and unexpected stories. Is there something you can share that might surprise us?
I’m not a huge cook! I think most people assume all dietitians love to cook, but that’s definitely not me. I enjoy it sometimes and am actually quite the foodie, but on most days I’m a big fan of keeping things simple.

I think that’s one of the reasons I love helping clients find realistic ways to care for themselves without overcomplicating nutrition. Food doesn’t have to be fancy or time-consuming to support your health, and I enjoy helping people find an approach that actually fits their life.

Pricing:

  • Free 15-minute consults available
  • Initial sessions are $260
  • 30-minute sessions are $110
  • 50-minute sessions are $165
  • I can provide a superbill to submit to insurance for reimbursement
