Today we’d like to introduce you to Christiaan Luneberg.
Hi Christiaan, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I was introduced to rock climbing while I was in college. Once I had tried it, I was hooked. After years of taking friends out to experience this new game the idea came up to open an indoor rock gym. I being was told that I needed to get a solid job. My friend since first grade, Paul Frakas, was not happy with his work direction and so was born our partnership. As the years past with little success, I stopped telling people about the goal just so I could avoid that question, “So, have you opened that climbing thing yet”.
More years past as we drove miles and miles to find that location and then finally to have it show up right in our backyard. In 2004 we finally got lucky. We had aligned all the pieces and Boulderdash Indoor Rock Climbing Studio was born. Now we have three locations- Ventura, Conejo Valley, and San Fernando.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
There have been many challenges- from losing loved members, to battles with the city planning departments
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your business?
I think the name says it all. As to how we are different, I think it best to reference what I have heard. These days there are more gyms out there that are bigger and sexier, but the thing that I hear the most is that when you come to Boulderdash you feel like you have been seen. It is quite difficult to leave the place without having met at least one new person. People like to hang out because this is where their friends are. We also set the best routes in the world.
We all have a different way of looking at and defining success. How do you define success?
Paying the bills and leaving work with a smile on my face.
