Today we’d like to introduce you to Dorothy Findlater.
Hi Dorothy, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
I was born in London and raised with a deep appreciation for British traditions, especially the simple pleasure of gathering around a beautifully prepared table for tea.
After many years working in the entertainment industry, I moved to the Monterey Peninsula and saw an opportunity to share an authentic English Afternoon Tea experience with the local community. That inspiration led me to create Rosemary & Thyme High Teas.
As a catering company, we bring the entire experience directly to our clients’ homes, gardens, workplaces and chosen venues. From vintage china and freshly baked scones to delicate sandwiches, homemade treats and attentive service, every detail is thoughtfully arranged.
What began as a love of tea and British hospitality has grown into private celebrations, corporate events, seasonal teas and educational Tea Talks exploring the history and etiquette of Afternoon Tea. Today, my greatest pleasure is creating memorable occasions that encourage people to slow down, connect and enjoy a little taste of England here on the beautiful Monterey Peninsula.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
Like many small businesses, the journey has not always been a smooth one. One of the greatest challenges has been helping people understand that Rosemary & Thyme is a mobile Afternoon Tea catering company rather than a traditional tearoom. We bring the complete experience directly to our clients, which requires considerable planning, transportation, preparation and attention to detail behind the scenes.
Building awareness in a new community, finding the right venues and managing the rising costs of quality ingredients have also presented challenges. However, each obstacle has encouraged me to become more creative, resourceful and determined. I have learned to adapt, listen carefully to my clients and remain true to my vision of offering an authentic English Afternoon Tea experience.
The road has certainly required patience and perseverance, but seeing guests gather around the table, connect with one another and enjoy what we have created makes every challenge worthwhile.
Great, so let’s talk business. Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
Rosemary & Thyme High Teas is a traditional English Afternoon Tea catering company serving the Monterey Peninsula. Rather than operating from a tearoom, we bring the complete experience directly to private homes, gardens, workplaces and chosen venues.
We specialize in elegant private celebrations, corporate gatherings, bridal and birthday teas, seasonal events and educational Tea Talks exploring the history, traditions and etiquette of Afternoon Tea. Each occasion is thoughtfully prepared with vintage china, freshly baked scones, delicate finger sandwiches, sweet treats and our exclusive Rosemary & Thyme Signature Gold Blend tea.
What sets us apart is the authenticity and personal care behind every event. Born in London, I bring my English heritage and understanding of British hospitality to each experience. We take care of everything—from setting the tables and serving guests to clearing away afterward—allowing our hosts to relax and enjoy their occasion.
I am especially proud that Rosemary & Thyme offers more than a beautifully presented tea. We create an atmosphere that encourages people to slow down, connect and make lasting memories. Whether serving an intimate gathering or presenting one of our Tea Talks, our aim is to bring a genuine taste of England and the warmth of traditional hospitality to every table.
Can you tell us more about what you were like growing up?
Growing up in London, I was independent, curious and always interested in people. I enjoyed bringing people together and had a lively imagination, along with a natural sense of adventure. I was also quite determined—once I set my mind to something, I usually found a way to make it happen.
I was drawn to creativity, entertainment and the traditions surrounding family gatherings and hospitality. Looking back, those early interests shaped both sides of my career: working with performers through Mirror Images Global Entertainment and creating welcoming, memorable experiences through Rosemary & Thyme High Teas.
