Today we’d like to introduce you to Hugo Nunez.
Hi Hugo, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
My story is one of perseverance, growth, and second chances. I was born in Mexico and immigrated to the United States, where I faced many challenges along the way. Before barbering became my career, I experienced abuse, loss, gang involvement, homelessness, and addiction. There were times when I lost everything and had to rebuild from the ground up. At one point, I was living out of my car with my dog, unsure of what the future would hold.
Through all of that, barbering remained a constant. Cutting hair started as a passion when I was young. Long before I was licensed, I was cutting the hair of friends, family, and people in my community, teaching myself as much as I could and learning through experience. Eventually, I attended barber school to sharpen my skills and master the craft.
Although I had been cutting hair for many years, I didn’t earn my barber license until 2020. Getting licensed gave me the opportunity to take my skills and future to another level. It represented a new chapter and everything I had worked to overcome.
After working in a barbershop in Yakima and continuing to cut hair from my own space, I decided to take a chance on myself. In 2022, I opened Hugo’s Barbershop in Seattle. Starting a business from scratch wasn’t easy, but I was determined to create something of my own and build a place where people felt welcome. I spent countless hours introducing myself to people, handing out cards around the University of Washington and throughout the community, and doing whatever it took to earn trust one client at a time.
Today, barbering is about much more than haircuts. It’s about connection, community, and giving back whenever I can. Over the years, I’ve learned that a haircut can be more than just a service. It can be a conversation, a confidence boost, a fresh start, or simply a moment where someone feels seen and valued.
There was a time when the life I have today felt impossible. If there’s one thing I hope people take from my story, it’s that change is possible. If even one person can see themselves in my journey and realize that they, too, can overcome their circumstances and build a better future, then sharing my story is worth it. I want people to know that where you start in life does not have to determine where you finish. Who I am today is proof that the life you dream about can become reality, and if my story helps even one person believe they can do it too, then it’s all been worth it.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
It definitely has not been a smooth road. One of the biggest challenges I’ve faced wasn’t learning how to cut hair or even opening a business. It was learning to believe that I deserved success and that my past didn’t determine my future.
For a long time, I carried the weight of where I’d been and the mistakes I’d made. When you’ve spent years overcoming difficult circumstances, it can be hard to see yourself differently than the world sees you. I had to learn that my worth wasn’t defined by my worst moments and that it was okay to dream bigger for myself.
Becoming a business owner brought a different set of challenges. I had to learn everything on my own. Marketing, finances, customer service, leadership, and growing a clientele all came with lessons that could only be learned through experience. There were plenty of setbacks, sacrifices, and moments where I questioned myself, but I refused to quit.
Even today, I continue to make the three-hour commute each way between Yakima and Seattle because I believe in what I’ve built and the community I’ve had the privilege to serve. Success didn’t happen overnight, and it still requires commitment and consistency every day.
Looking back, I don’t regret the struggles because they taught me resilience, gratitude, and perseverance. They taught me that growth happens one day at a time and that where you’ve been doesn’t have to determine where you’re going. I wouldn’t be the man I am today without those experiences, and I carry those lessons with me every day.

At Hugo’s Barbershop, we believe a great haircut is only part of the experience. Since opening in Seattle in 2022, our goal has been to create an atmosphere where people feel welcome, respected, and comfortable the moment they walk through the door.
We take pride in providing high-quality cuts, attention to detail, and consistency, but what truly makes the shop special is the relationships we build. The barber chair has always been more than a place for a haircut. It’s a place where people connect, share stories, celebrate milestones, and sometimes just take a break from the stress of everyday life.
Men’s mental health is something that’s close to my heart. Over the years, I’ve had the privilege of listening to clients talk about family, relationships, recovery, grief, and life in general. Creating a space where people feel comfortable being themselves is just as important to me as providing a great service.
Another thing I’m proud of is helping other barbers grow. I want Hugo’s Barbershop to be a place where talented barbers can build careers, support their families, and continue developing their craft. Several of us have overcome adversity in our own lives, and I believe those experiences help us connect with people from all walks of life.
At the end of the day, we’re more than just a barbershop. We’re a community. Whether you’re coming in for your first visit or you’ve been with us for years, our goal is simple: provide exceptional service, build genuine relationships, and make sure every person leaves feeling confident and cared for.
Can you tell us more about what you were like growing up?
Growing up, life wasn’t easy. I experienced a lot of hardship at a young age, and because of that, I learned early on how to rely on myself. I had to figure things out on my own and learn how to survive long before I should have had to. Looking back, I wasn’t building from the ground up. I was building from below the ground up.
A lot of who I am today comes from those experiences. They taught me resilience, independence, and perseverance. I learned how to adapt, how to keep moving forward, and how to work for the things I wanted in life.
I didn’t have everything figured out growing up, and I certainly couldn’t have imagined where life would eventually take me. But even then, I was learning lessons that would later shape the man I became. I learned to depend on myself, to keep going when things got hard, and to never stop searching for something better.
Life has humbled me in many ways, but I believe some of the qualities that helped me survive are the same qualities that helped me build the life I have today. I’ve learned that difficult beginnings don’t have to determine how your story ends, and I’m grateful for the opportunity to keep growing and giving back to others along the way.
