Hi Krista, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
Hello, I am Krista, the founder of Pawsitive Pups Dog Training, located in Chula Vista and San Diego, California. My lifelong passion for animals, specifically dogs, has led me to establish this business in 2023. Starting in my childhood, I have been involved in dog walking and sitting for neighbors and family friends. I’ve always felt such a strong special connection to dogs. Understanding and patience with them always came naturally for me.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Prior to pursuing a career in dog training, I was a psychology student and have also gained experience working with groomers, breeders, and veterinarians, including a Veterinary Assistant certification and an Associate of Applied Science Degree in Veterinary Technology. Through every thing, I always found myself coming back to dog training. While other jobs and schooling did feel exactly what it was, “just a job” training dogs has never felt that way. I am so lucky to have been able to pursue my passions and create this business to help others and their dogs while also having fun and enjoying what I do!
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
My professional journey as a dog trainer began at a Petco store in Eastlake, California, where I spent five years working with hundreds of different breeds, sizes, and temperaments, both in-store and with personal clients outside of the store. My skills and dedication led to my appointment as Senior Dog Trainer for the district, where I mentored new Dog Trainer Students, guiding them until they were fully equipped to teach their classes.
I specialize in Positive Reinforcement Training. I would say this sets me apart from others in this field because I strongly believe in these methods rather than balanced or corrective training. I am completely against tools such as prong collars, choke chains, electronic collars, etc. Positive reinforcement dog training is an effective approach to training dogs that involves rewarding desired behaviors rather than punishing unwanted behaviors. This method is based on the idea that dogs are more likely to repeat behaviors that are positively reinforced with treats, praise, or other rewards, rather than those that are punished or corrected. This approach helps to build a strong bond of trust and communication between the dog and owner and creates an enjoyable training experience for both parties. Positive Reinforcement is the best approach for any dog especially those with behavioral issues such as reactivity, anxiety, and aggression. All dogs deserve patience and understanding.
So maybe we end on discussing what matters most to you and why?
Rescuing and giving dogs a second chance has always been so important to me. All of the current (blue heeler mix, dalmatian, and two cats) and past pets in my life have always been rescues. In the past I have volunteered at the animal shelter in Bonita, CA for “dog days out” where you can take a rescue dog out for the day to walk and gain exposure for adoption.
San Diego Humane Society is currently at 171% capacity
One major reason dogs are surrendered to shelters or rehomed is due to behavioral issues. This is why dog training is so important. I feel if I can help atleast one family and dog’s at home situation that’s potentially one less dog out of the shelter.
