Community Highlights: Meet Kelly Sloane of MSFORMALDEHYDE

Today we’d like to introduce you to Kelly Sloane.

Hi Kelly, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
I started my business in 2008 after getting divorced.. I worked in science many years then my son had brain cancer and lost his sight. It kind of pushed me to work for myself. Going through cancer treatments almost losing my son made me change working 7 days a week. I really enjoy fashion and constantly come up with new idea’s.
I have an Etsy store but also do pop ups at Michael’s stores locally. I will be traveling to Las Vegas, Portland snd Seattle for Oddities and Curiosities Expo. I also do a wonderful event in LA called the
Krampus ball LA in December.
If you need something fabulous for Halloween hit me up.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Right now is struggling with AI in art. How many small businesses are going to suffer from it.

Marketing is really hard for small businesses especially since I am different.
Tariffs have really effected my small business since I do 45% overseas sales. It’s been very hard to pivot having a small business.

As you know, we’re big fans of MSFORMALDEHYDE . For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about the brand?
I make horns, teeth masks to be the scary tooth fairy to tiki. I am totally in love with Carmen Miranda and love making big fruit pieces.
I do many whimsical Ren Faire hats and frog pieces. I surround myself with plants. I plant pollinators and milkweed for monarch butterflies. I have helped release over a 1000 monarch butterflies with monarch conservation. Living in San Diego I get inspired by nature around me.

What would you say have been one of the most important lessons you’ve learned?
Keep pushing myself to do better and bigger things. I am very lucky to travel with the oddities and curiosities expo. I am doing 10 cities this year. Las vegas is in a few weeks. It has really helped my small business grow. There’s nothing better than having someone buy something you made with your hands.
