Today we’d like to introduce you to Maddie Jones.
Hi Maddie, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
Messy Hera was formed in the Fall of 2021. Everyone was either 14 or 15 at the time, and had honestly nothing much better in our lives at that point, we all just loved playing music. The members, Ronin, Talia, and Maddie all met at the place we went to take lessons for our instruments. Maddie wanted to start a band, so she hit up ronin to play drums, and later on we found Talia to join, and worked every weekend writing songs, practicing covers, and slowly curating a full set for us to prepare for shows. After our first, it was like we hit the ground running. Playing, recording, marketing, all led to making many friends, spreading love, and contributing to the SoCal Punk community.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
the road was absolutely not smooth. We would run into obstacles as being a young female fronted band, we would get treated as less than, and it was hard for us to get opportunities in the music scene. So we decided to put together our own shows and record DIY style to make our own look. Making sure people knew who we were even if it wasn’t easy. It is hard to manage not only a band, but also audio engineers, producers, venue owners and security, etc. all of these people have their own perception of you and your art, and some may reject it, and when that would happen to us, we either tackled it our own way, and probably wrote a song out of it. We believe our band is a form of resistance, our successes and struggles we got through make us motivated to keep going.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
Messy Hera is a female fronted Riot Grrrl punk band that plays music for those who want to feel heard and understood. We specialize in music discussing rough social and political issues and are known for our aggressive empowering sound against these issues as a young band. We are most proud of our show records opening for bigger artists such as Otoboke Beaver and GRLwood after working in the local scene to gain attraction for higher audience. What sets us apart from others is our message. We fight against the normative, we are tied to our local community, and we are able to share our unique perspectives
What do you like best about our city? What do you like least?
What we love about our city is the unlimited amount of things there are, how there is such beautiful history, and how accepting people are. We host one of the biggest pride parades every year, we have chicano park, we have the houses of the world, we have everything. However the thing we like least is how expensive a lot of these things can be and the high level of homelessness
