Today we’d like to introduce you to Jillian Sanders.
Hi Jillian, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I started off in the NICU (neonatal intensive care unit) back in 2017 as a new grad nurse. My first two years were rough and I didn’t know if this was indeed the right unit for me. However, I soon found people that would take me under their wings and become both my mentor and friend. Slowly, I gained confidence within my self and my skills as a nurse. In 2022, I felt that I could get all I could from my staff and made the decision to go out of my comfort zone and try travel nursing. My first assignment was in Savannah, GA, and I was very blessed to have had a wonderful first assignment as a new travel nurse. My adventures have taken me to Savannah, Winston-Salem NC, Baltimore MD, Washington DC, Voorhees NJ, Falls Church VA, Danville PA, Memphis TN, Charlottesville VA, Nashville TN, and now Columbus OH. Throughout this journey, I have met so many incredible people that I otherwise wouldn’t have met if I hadn’t gone on this journey. I have met so many versions of myself that I never knew existed but when you have to figure out everything on your own when navigating travel assignments, it forces you to grow a little bit more. Travel nursing has reignited my passion for working in the NICU and it has been the best thing I have ever done in my life so far. I believe if you are able to, that every one in healthcare should try travel nursing or whatever your healthcare role may be.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
I think with anything that’s new to you can start off a little bumpy. I’ve had to navigate finding pet friendly housing in cities I’ve never been to. There’s been unforeseen circumstances that have arisen during my assignments that once again I had to figure out in a city where I know no one. In the beginning, it was a little scary because you’re all by yourself and you just have to trust with what you’ve come up with to fix those circumstances actually work out.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I am a travel NICU nurse and content creator. I’m most proud of betting on myself to leave the comfort of everything that I knew and hit the road with my cats not knowing what lies ahead. I honestly can say that my life truly started at age 31/32(that’s when I started travel nursing) and then I started content creation at age 36. Showing others that it is never too late to try something new.
How do you think about luck?
I truly believe that I’ve always been placed in the right place at the right time throughout each city I’ve worked in. I’ve gotten really lucky to have had really great experiences with pretty much all of my travel assignments. I know that this type of experience can be different for everyone but for me I honestly can’t complain.
