Today we’d like to introduce you to Teya Perkins.
Hi Teya, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
Painting, has been one of my healthy ways to cope. Through the four teal painted walls of my teenage life I can remember putting on a big set of Dr.Dre headphones on while my parents yelled at each other. The noise canceling on those wow-ee. Painting was just one of the new mediums I could sit and really go into “my world” of imagination.
The hard decision, college or…cosmetology school. This steered me towards the wonders of color theory. My instructor would sneak us into the color room and play around with different formulas and see what we got ! Bless her.
I must share, a past partner (naesgarden) of mine gave me the most inspiration to just be, and create. Being around him and his passion inspired me to understand it’s okay to express. But also, understanding what happens when you share…Love.
Today, creating a blank canvas with my own color language, has taught me the viewer will see what they’re wanting to see. An the creator will try to understand what its subconscious mind wants to say. Iv learned I wouldn’t be as courageous with my art if it weren’t for the ones before me.
I create for god, and troubled teens. It’s intuitive art, typically I start with what colors I’m feeling in the moment. In this “state of flow or zone” I’m able to pass through all emotions and the last, the best. Gratitude.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
My road? More like a rollercoaster. Through addiction, art was always there but so was the rumors, negativity, or jealousy (ex bfs). Remember trying to understand the word “pro” is an [opinion].
Also to the next, please understand people will always feel like they have an opinion…One of your old best friends bfs may even play telephone to get to ya just to say “your art looks like a kids drawling”. I’m glad you see her 🙂
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I’ve been told I’m a colorist, I tend to gravitate, towards acrylic, sharpies, and Posca markers. But I love trying new things like bingo markers! Why not? I’ll usually put something interesting in my kit like a penny or a mini hand just to create a special texture. I specialize in emotionally expressive, mixed media, storytelling. With a strong focus on identity, transformation, femininity, and mental emotional worlds.
I’m most proud of my most recent piece because it feels like the strongest representation of my artistic voice so far. I brought together my love for character design, bold color, fashion, texture, and storytelling to create an entire world within one piece. I didn’t want everything to look perfect or controlled I wanted the layers, marks, and characters to reflect the complexity of emotions and identity. It feels playful and chaotic, but also deeply personal, and I think that balance is what makes the piece feel like mine. An it could be yours.
So maybe we end on discussing what matters most to you and why?
God, Sobriety, family, and creative expression.
