Life & Work with Sarah Slurpie of Central Coast (California)

Today we’d like to introduce you to Sarah Slurpie.

Hi Sarah, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
my story’s kind of all over the place. I became a mom pretty young, and for most of my adult life, my world was basically my kids and my family. But honestly, I think social media has been part of my life for almost as long as I can remember. I was online back even before AOL and AIM were a big thing, and then Friendster, MySpace, blogger , xanga, stickam being my real social venture , YouTube and everything else started popping up. I was always the person jumping into random chat rooms, bringing people into group conversations, making friends with strangers and basically finding any excuse to get people talking. I loved people. I loved the randomness of it, and I loved bringing different people together. That eventually turned into making videos, podcasting, streaming, gaming, helping build communities and events across different platforms. I was married for over 16 years and spent a lot of that time raising my kids and being a stay-at-home mom. After my marriage ended, I had to figure out who I was again outside of being a mom and a wife. Social media and creating things gave me somewhere to put all of that energy. These days, I’ve been doing a little bit of everything. Content creation, social media, marketing, gaming, streaming. Helping businesses build their presence online. I’m not really chasing being famous. What I’ve always loved is people. I love creating a space where people can find each other, whether they have everything in common or absolutely nothing, I’m still figuring out what the next chapter looks like, but I feel like I’m finally getting back to that person who was always online creating little communities and making people talk to each other. I guess I’ve been doing this a lot longer than I realized.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Definitely not. I’ve lost friends along the way, had people misunderstand me, and plenty of moments where I had to step back and figure things out again. Being online this long means people will make assumptions. I share a lot, but I’m also pretty private, so there’s always pieces people don’t see. Sometimes people get it totally wrong, and honestly, I’m okay with that. I think people are naturally curious, and I like that. I think the important thing is staying curious instead of assuming you know someone. That’s why I still love social media. It’s this messy, tangled web, but I love the little communities that pop up with people from all over. Sometimes it makes sense, sometimes it doesn’t. But I love the conversations and the creativity. So no, not smooth at all. But maybe it doesn’t have to be.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I’ve never really fit into just one thing, and honestly, I kind of like it that way. I create content, I stream, I game, I podcast, I help out with social media, but underneath all of that, what I really do is bring people together. Even before social media was what it is, I was finding ways to get people talking, creating little communities. I’m finding my way back into that, creating again, streaming, helping businesses, just experimenting to see what sticks. What I want, I think, is to bring more people into that space. Creators, strangers, people who just need somebody to say, hey, go for it. I’m curious about where that could lead, maybe bigger content projects, maybe community events, maybe something I haven’t imagined yet. But, most of all, I don’t want people to just watch, I want them to participate. That’s probably the biggest thing about me. I’m still figuring it out, but I’m excited to keep going. I loved bringing people together, strangers becoming friends, watching someone realize they’re good at something and giving them that little push. That part has never really changed. These days, it might be streaming, helping a business with their socials, or just trying out new ideas, but what I’m really chasing is connection. I don’t care about polishing some perfect online version of myself. Sarah Slurpie has always been a little random, a little real, sometimes confusing, and that’s okay. I like keeping people curious, not giving every answer, just leaving the door open for people to step in and be part of it.

Where we are in life is often partly because of others. Who/what else deserves credit for how your story turned out?

there’s the whole swirl of people I could give credit to . My children, my family/siblings , close friends, new strangers, eve. People I’ve dated along the way , some who didn’t get me and some who really did. They all add up. credit to myself for still venturing on whatever new path is created even when I have no clue what’s exactly I’m doing .
Truthfully It’s that mix of curiosity and confusion that really fuels me. The ones who don’t get me sometimes motivate me the most, like a funny little push to keep going. And I don’t know, maybe that’s the through line. Everything and everyone, the matrix , all of it weaving together into why I create, why I connect, and why I keep going. It’s not neat, but it’s real, and that’s kind of the point
