Today we’d like to introduce you to Jasmin Tupy.
Hi Jasmin, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
I’ve always had this need to obsessively document moments in my life. To me, photos serve as a journal. Documentation of the big moments, but also the small, mundane ones that probably don’t seem important at the time. I think a part of me always knew that life changes quickly, and it’s so easy to forget the mundane, or how life once was. I was always trying to hold onto those little pieces of life so that years later, the photos could transport me right back to that moment. And honestly, it’s worked. A decade later, I can look back at photos from my teenage years and remember little moments I had completely forgotten about. It’s exactly why I loved taking photos in the first place.
In college, my obsessive documentation continued, but it started becoming more artistic. Eventually, I started getting inquiries from friends, then friends of friends, and eventually strangers who wanted me to photograph their moments too. Somewhere along the way, I realized this thing I had been doing my whole life could actually become a career.
Fast forward a few years, and I eventually quit my 9-to-5 office job to pursue photography full time. Now I get to obsessively document other people’s biggest life moments and give them the same care I’ve always given to documenting my own. It’s truly an honor.
I’m a full-time wedding photographer based in Santa Barbara, California, but I travel all over to wherever couples will take me! I love what I do!
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Everyone loves a story where the protagonist struggles and comes out stronger, but to be honest, my journey into full-time photography has been as good as I could have wished for.
I will say, though, that my biggest personal obstacle has been comparison and putting my work out into the world. When I first started taking photos, they were for me and my own memories. Now, I’m entrusted with capturing some of the biggest memories in other people’s lives, and that is a responsibility I don’t take lightly. I’m incredibly honored by it, but with that comes a lot of pressure.
I’m constantly wondering if I could have done something better, second-guessing an edit, or questioning whether my work is good enough. I think that’s probably a very natural part of being an artist. I’m always going to be critical of my own creative process, and I’m always going to be tweaking, learning, and improving.
As much as that can feel like an obstacle, I also think it’s an important one to have. It means I’m growing, evolving, and challenging my art instead of becoming complacent. Good artists evolve and shift as they grow as both people and artists. Our work should change with us.
So, in a weird way, I think the day I stop feeling a little nervous about the immense responsibility (and honor!) of this job, or the day I become completely complacent with my editing and artistic process, is probably the day I should move on from wedding photography.
So I guess, in a way, I hope this obstacle never disappears!
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I’m a wedding photographer based in Santa Barbara, California, but I travel all over California and wherever my couples bring me. I photograph weddings on both digital and 35mm film, and my work blends documentary storytelling with an editorial touch.
I think what sets me apart is the combination of my artistic eye and my ability to make people feel comfortable in front of my camera. I studied Communications and Visual Arts in undergrad, so I’ve always loved both sides of this work: I love people, and I also love a really good composition. Photography is quite literally my dream job because I get to blend the two.
I get to capture one of the biggest days in someone’s life with intention and artistry, while also giving them the comfort of knowing that their vision, personalities, and relationship are actually being understood.
No two couples are alike. No two wedding days are the same. So why would I ever treat either thing like they are?
I take the time to really understand my couples and build a genuine connection with them.
I think people sometimes don’t realize just how much time you spend with your wedding photographer on your wedding day. They’re there through so many of the little in-between moments, not just the big ones. Anyone can learn how to take a beautifully composed photograph (technically), but to me, being a great wedding photographer is to make your couples feel SEEN.
What I’m most proud of is being able to create beautiful, intentional imagery while also making my couples feel understood, and completely comfortable in front of my camera. That combination of artistry and care is what I want people to remember about working with me.
Is there something surprising that you feel even people who know you might not know about?
I love this question! If you looked only at my photography work, you might assume I’m a very polished, elegant, and refined person because my work definitely reflects those qualities (which I love). But as a person, I’m actually very down-to-earth, giggly, talkative, and a huge surfer. In fact, surfing is how I met my boyfriend!
I think that contrast is also a fun part of how I approach my work. I really want my couples to feel like they can be themselves around me. With every couple, I send out a questionnaire in addition to our planning calls because I genuinely want to get to know them as a couple. It helps me serve them in a way that actually fits their personalities rather than taking a one-size-fits-all approach.
And my favorite part of the planning process is probably that if we’re texting, I love sending voice memos! I feel like they’re SO much more personal than a text, and I’m a big fan of anything that makes the process feel more like two actual humans talking to each other.
